It is time again to equip your children for the upcoming school year. However, if you are like most Americans, despite inflation, you are not making any more cash than you did a year ago. So we offer just a little advice on the best way to keep your kids and their school happy, while staying on your budget.
Buying for school hard
Back to school time is the second-largest shopping season of the year, and many stores are offering good deals to lure you in. However, there is one problem.
Patricia Hasson is the Clarifi President and Executive Director. She said:
"Wait for the list [of supplies required by the school]. It's easy to be tempted right now with all these great offers that they are advertising right now, except in a lot of cases you're not even sure what the school is going to require you to get."
You can certainly benefit from the deals still, since they are really great bargains.
Family electronic devices
When you are attempting to get big discounts on computers, iPads, notebook computers and more, back to school time is the best time of year, according to author David Bach who spoke with NBC recently. He said that families spend $217 on average at back to school time getting brand new electronics.
That contradicts Kristen Guilfoos of CBS-WSAW, who says such products will not hit their lowest costs until Black Friday at the end of Nov. However, it is unlikely your little student can hold out that long for school essentials. So we recommend following Bach's advice and getting those things as soon as possible.
You can get things online and refurbished and pay a lot less for them too.
Getting other materials
According to Bach:
"September is the best time to shop for everything else."
He further suggests holding off as long as possible, because the real bargains on these things come after the school year begins. Perhaps your children can make do with materials from your home office for a while until the sales kick in.
Bach has some opposition with Lindsay Sakraida of DealNews.com:
"There's really no incentive to hold off on purchasing school supplies. A lot of stores like Staples and Office Max, they're offering special promotions that just won't get any better after the school year starts."
Purchasing in bulk might be the very best thing to do, and you also might even be able to find things for cheap at the Dollar Store. Paper, pens and pencils are pretty much the same no matter where you get it.
Purchasing clothing for school
You need to watch for bargains online and in stores in case you are going to get your kids the latest fashions and save money.
Sakraida said:
"Typically September and October are the best times to buy jeans because they're trying to unload what didn't sell in the back to school sales."
You can get brand names such as Abercrombie for as little as $20 sometimes, so try to find major discounts at brand names.
